Garbage Collection

The Civic Club has contracted with Republic Services (acquirer of previous providers Allied Services and BFI) to provide "garage door" garbage service to members in good standing on Mondays and Thursdays. Republic Services will collect up to ten bags and/or cans of traditional household garbage and lawn clippings from the area of your garage door. The "garage door" means an accessible location near your driveway or gate.
Republic Services will pick up a maximum of ten (10) bags or cans from the garage door.  If you have more than ten bags or cans, the additional bags/cans should be brought to the curb no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before pickup day. In addition, all tree trimmings should be cut in four-foot lengths, bundled with string or twine and brought to the curb. Bundles should not weigh more than 45 pounds.

Republic Services observes the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

If a holiday falls on a scheduled pickup day, then your garbage will be collected on the next regularly scheduled collection day.   From time to time, Republic Services at its option may perform pickups on the holidays above.
If Republic Services misses your house, for fastest service you should call Republic Services directly at their customer service line:  (713) 726-7300 and report the problem.  Republic Services should send a truck by to correct the mistake. If you are having difficulty with Republic Services, please send an e-mail to to report the problem.
Republic Services will take away heavy trash, including furniture, grills (no propane), boxes and appliances when placed at the curb every Thursday.   Members should be patient, as such items may be collected by a different truck than that used for normal pickup. Republic Services will only pickup refrigerators or freezers that have had freon removed and been tagged by an appliance repair professional. You may also consider calling used appliance dealers or charities regarding the disposal of old appliances.   If you are having difficulty getting an item to the curb, call Republic Services at (713) 726-7300 to arrange for a special pickup at extra cost.   Republic Services will also make pickups on days other than Thursday for a $15.00 charge.
The services contracted for with Republic Services are for regular household garbage and certain heavy items only. The following items, while not an exhaustive list, will not be picked up, even on Thursdays: construction materials, lumber, tree trunks, lawn mowers, roofing, plywood, tires, carpet. You must arrange for a private disposal service to haul these and other similar materials away.   Please see the attached Services Acceptance Protocol below for a full listing of unaccepted items and general rules:

AOCC Trash Protocol

In addition to standard waste pickup, starting in January 2011 Republic provides all of Afton Oaks with recycling services.  They collect newspaper, paper, magazines, glass, cardboard, phone books, catalogs, all plastic containers, and aluminum every Thursday.   No need to separate recyclables.   Bins are provided to property addresses and should remain with the property.  Republic will replace bins damaged due to normal wear and tear.  If bins are damaged by causes other than normal wear and tear or otherwise need to be replaced then a replacement bin charge of $15.00 will be added to the property's AOCC account.  To receive a replacement recycling bin, call (713) 726-7300.   Please put your newspapers in grocery sacks or under heavier items to keep them from blowing away.   The above Republic Services Protocol contains more information on recyclable items.   For additional information on recycling in general, see the Rules sheet above for more information.

The Civic Club's contract with Republic Services operates under the City of Houston's garbage sponsorship program, and the Civic Club receives an allocation of municipal tax money to partially offset the costs of the Republic Services contract.
