Garbage Collection

The Civic Club has contracted with Republic Waste (acquirer of previous providers Allied Waste and BFI) to provide "garage door" garbage service to members in good standing on Mondays and Thursdays. Republic Waste will collect up to six bags and/or cans of traditional household garbage from the area of your garage door. The "garage door" means an accessible location near your driveway or gate.  Lawn clippings should be placed at the curb for pickup.  If you employ a yard service, you may want to ask the service to take the clippings with them.

Republic Waste will pick up a maximum of six (6) bags or cans from the garage door.  If you have more than six bags or cans, the additional bags/cans should be brought to the curb no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before pickup day. In addition, all tree trimmings should be cut in five-foot lengths, bundled with string or twine and brought to the curb. Bundles should not weigh more than 45 pounds.

Republic Waste observes the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

If a holiday falls on a scheduled pickup day, then your garbage will be collected on the next regularly scheduled collection day.   From time to time, Republic Waste at its option may perform pickups on the holidays above.

If Republic Waste misses your house, for fastest service you should call Republic Waste directly at their customer service line:  (713) 635-6666 and report the problem.  Republic Waste should send a truck by to correct the mistake. If you are having difficulty with Republic Waste, please send an e-mail to garbage@aftonoaks.org to report the problem.

Republic Waste will take away heavy trash, including furniture, boxes and appliances when placed at the curb on the last Thursday of the month. There is a one (1) item limit.   Members should be patient, as such items may be collected by a different truck than that used for normal pickup. Republic Waste will only pickup refrigerators or freezers that have had freon removed and been tagged by an appliance repair professional. You may also consider calling used appliance dealers or charities regarding the disposal of old appliances.   Should you require a heavy pickup on a day other than the last Thursday of the month, you may call Republic Waste at (713) 635-6666 to schedule the pick-up.  Members will be charged $15.00 per item per pick-up.   Republic Waste will bill the Member directly for this service.  If you are having difficulty getting an item to the curb, call Teri League at Republic Waste at (713) 636-6315 to arrange for a special pickup.

The service contracted for with Republic Waste is for regular household garbage only. The following items, while not an exhaustive list, will not be picked up: construction materials, lumber, roofing, plywood, tires, carpet. You must arrange for a private disposal service to haul these and other similar materials away.   Please see the attached Waste Acceptance Protocol below for a full listing of unaccepted items and general rules:

Republic Waste offers a recycling service for an additional fee of about $4.00 per month. They collect newspaper, paper, magazines, catalogs, #1 and #2 plastic and aluminum every Thursday.   Currently, Republic Waste does not accept glass (but such items are accepted by West U's recycling center).  Please do not put glass in recycle bins.   To receive a free blue recycling bin, call (713) 635-6666.  Republic Waste will bill Members directly for this service on a quarterly basis, and they will allow you to autopay to a credit card.   Please put your newspapers in grocery sacks or under heavier items to keep them from blowing away.   The above Republic Waste Protocol contains more information on recyclable items.   For additional information on recycling in general, see the Rules sheet above for more information.

The Civic Club's contract with Republic Waste operates under the City of Houston's garbage sponsorship program, and the Civic Club receives an allocation of municipal tax money to partially offset the costs of the Republic Waste contract.
